Learning and Families was established in August of 1986. It began as a group of ten families in the Sarasota area committed to encouragement, educational opportunity, and unity in home educating their children. These founding families, along with others throughout the state of Florida, paved the way for the wonderful home education environment we enjoy today.
In 2003, Learning and Families incorporated as a Florida state registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization. In 2007, LAF launched a homeschool co-op that served families with children of all ages with academic and social enrichment.
Today, the members of LAF are diverse, from brand new homeschoolers to veterans who have been homeschooling for 20 years or more. Many participate in the co-op in some form, but some do not. We have families with only children and others with many children. We have single parents, grandparents, foster parents, and adopted parents, and the educational philosophies represented are as diverse as the members themselves. But one thing is the same, the members of LAF have decided not to go it alone!
