At the Florida House Institute, you will have fun with your fifth graders as they are guided through our state of the art demonstration house for a hands-on, interactive experience focusing on Energy in their daily lives. Transformation of different forms of Energy such as light, chemical, electrical, mechanical and heat will be demonstrated at work. This exploration is aligned to Florida Science standards. Students will rotate among the following learning stations designed to support FCAT 2.0 objectives:
-Energy Cycle- Students generate electricity by riding a bicycle-powered generator
-Hot Wired- Students open up a bedroom wall to learn about electric circuits, conductors and insulators
-Solar Power- Students investigate how solar panels produce electricity and hot water
-Window Wise – Students measure temperature change on high efficiency windows using laser thermometers
-Transformation Station- Students observe an operating miniature power plant
-Edible Energy –Students learn about and sample bio-energy from our gardens, investigate the food chain, and observe the water cycle
-Look Out Below – Students participate in a unique ‘under the house’ exploration to learn about how scientists conduct experiments and investigations
This half-day field trip is packed with 2 ½ hours of non-stop Energy exploration. Students will be provided a Logbook to record their exploration and participate in a Florida House Energy Vampire Scavenger Hunt with instructions for conducting an energy audit in their own homes.
