This event will provide hands-on learning activities focusing on the natural environment, with a backdrop of the FISH (Florida Institute for Saltwater Heritage) Preserve – over 100 acres of environmentally sensitive land in Cortez. Children of all ages and families will have opportunities to learn about water conservation, mangroves, fish and fowl, through stories, art activities, a pop-up mangrove tent and a guided tour of the Preserve. Teaching children to become good stewards of the land and water will help to protect our precious resources for generations. The Cortez Cultural Center Museum, showcasing the history of this unique fishing village, will be open to all and experts will be on hand to tell stories and answer questions.
Cortez is Florida’s last remaining traditional fishing village. People have fished for their livelihood here for thousands of years because the mangroves and seagrass are incredible nurseries for fish and other sea life. They provide other amazing benefits, including storm protection and reducing greenhouse gases that cause climate change.
