Did you know that beetles alone account for nearly a quarter of all animal species? Scientists estimate that there are around 5 million insect species on Earth! Some insects are considered pests, while others are used in food, medicine, science, fashion, warfare, art, and religion. Join us for an exploration of the wild and wonderful world of incredible insects! In this interactive program, we will learn about insect body parts and adaptations, how humans have used insects throughout history, and the important role insects play in our environment. If you're brave enough, you may even sample some edible insects! Then we'll head outside with sweep nets and viewing containers to see what kinds of insects we can catch and identify at Bay Preserve.
This program is suitable for children ages 6 to 10 years old and their families. A parent or guardian is required to stay on-site to assist and supervise their child(ren) for the duration of the program. All participants must sign a liability waiver.
Participants should bring a water bottle and wear clothing appropriate for the weather. We recommend sun protection, bug spray, and closed-toe shoes, no flip-flops. You may wish to bring a picnic lunch or a snack to enjoy on the lawn after the program. Restrooms and a water fountain are available on site.
A $5 dollar donation per child is suggested for this program. Your gift will help us save wild places and continue to engage people in nature. We greatly appreciate your support!
